How to download YouTube videos to Android

If one of the things for which you enjoy using your Android tablet is to watch YouTube videos, the need to be in range of a Wi-Fi hotspot can be a pain. And if you have a mobile data connection, watching those old favourites time and again can quickly put you over your monthly allowance. The solution is to download YouTube videos to your Android device for offline viewing. Here's how. Visit PC Advisor's YouTube channel.

Download YouTube videos to an Android tablet

Step 1. Several free apps are available that let you download YouTube movies to your Android tablet. We like TubeMate YouTube Downloader, but you won't find it at Google Play. Head to m.tubemate.net to access a list of download sites. We chose to download TubeMate from Android Freeware. See Android Advisor.

Step 2. Tap the Install app button at Android Freeware, then select a save location and tap Ok.

Step 3. By default, Android won't let you install software from sources other than Google Play. Tap Settings, Security, then enable the option to allow installation from Unknown sources. Tap Ok to the warning. Remember to reverse this setting following the installation of TubeMate.

Step 4. Now you're ready to install TubeMate. Find the downloaded .apk file using a file browser, and tap to install it. If you have a security app such as Lookout installed, it's worth using it to scan the download for malware before you install it. In the 'Complete action using' prompt choose your security app, then tap either Always or Just once. TubeMate YouTube Downloader will be scanned for malware, then installed on your Android tablet.

Step 5. Open the TubeMate app. You'll find a selection of videos on the home screen, and can use the Search option to browse more YouTube videos. Tap the grid option next to the magnifying glass to view your YouTube Favourites, Playlists, Subscriptions and more.

Step 6. Having found a video that you want to download, tap the green down-arrow to begin the process.

Step 7. TubeMate will display a list of download options, which includes various video resolutions and an option to save the file as an MP3. Note that this doesn't actually convert the file to MP3, but merely saves it as an MP3 rather than video file; most Android audio apps will recognise it as an ordinary MP3 file. Tap the download option you need.

Step 8. TubeMate will immediately download the file. To later view the video offline, simply look in the Videos folder in your Gallery and tap the file to begin playback.
